There's rumours abounding that if you've installed the beta version of Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) and Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) that you won't be able to uninstall IE8 and return to IE7.
Well this is partly true; but only applies in some specific circumstances. If you're thinking of rolling back to IE7 then read on to find out if this is going to be possible for you...
The uninstall issue affects users who've installed IE8 beta and XP SP3 in the following order:
- First you've installed IE8 beta version 1 while running XP SP2
- Second you've installed Service Pack 3 for Windows XP
- Finally you've upgraded IE8 to the beta version 2
At this point you're locked into IE8 and can no longer uninstall it. Windows Update is set to not offer you Service Pack 3 if you're running IE8 beta version 1 so it's something you'd have to download and install yourself. If you find yourself manually installing SP3, or you get a warning message about IE8 beta versions when running Windows update, take a long hard think about whether you want to commit to the beta version of IE8 at this time before you continue with the update. If you're not happy with IE8 at this time then abour the update and uninstall it first.
Microsoft™ point out that even if you find yourself stuck with IE8 you can continue to update it with new versions (beta or otherwise) as they become available. You can read the full information over on the IE Blog on MSDN.
