The recent CanSecWest Conference 2009 in Vancouver hosted the latest round of the Pwn2own competition in which prizes are given for finding security vulnerabilities in the most popular web browser and mobile phone devices.
This year the browser tested where Internet Explorer 8, Firefox and Chrome, running on Windows 7, and Safari and Firefox running on Mac OS on a MacBook.
A the end of the competition it was Google’s Chrome browser that came out the best with only one discovered vulnerability and no known way to actually exploit it. The other browsers all had 4 vulnerabilities found against them. The rules of the competition allow for the vulnerabilities to be passed to the browser developers for patching. so we should see some updates soon.
I think the results are particularly poignant in that many people questioned Google’s decision to develop yet another browser. Here we’ve seen Chrome outshine the rest of the field in the all important area of security. Here again we seen Google’s innovations paying dividends.
