Whilst most of the attention has been on the development of Windows 7 Microsoft® have made available a release candidate of Windows Vista SP2. This service pack is likely to be available in the first half of this year; but isn't going to revolutionize your Vista experience.
Most of the content in SP2 has already been released as part of Microsoft's on-going updates. However there are a few items that might benefit the average end user:
- Native blu-ray writing. If you're lucky enough to have a blu-ray writer in your PC you'll be able to write to it without the need for third party software.
- Windows Search 4.0. This version introduces bug fixes, performance improvements and the ability to search the indexes of other PCs that are also running Search version 4.
- Wireless connectivity improvements, particualrly after waking from a sleep (that's the computer, not you).
- Improved resource utilization by the Windows sidebar gadgets.
There's a few 'under the hood' changes as well. Let's hope this effort improves the stability and performance of Vista.
