On the day that it was announced that Oracle are to purchase Sun Microsystems there were two other announcements that might have more impact closer to home in the short term.
First was the announcement that Microsoft’s next release of the Windows operating system, Windows 7, is going to be out as a release candidate on May 5th. This is slated as being the only public release candidate and so functionally it should be ready for the shops and hopefully bug free. The final version is expected to be released this year, possibly as early as October.
Even sooner than that the next release of the popular Ubuntu Linux distro, version 9.04 (aka “Jaunty Jackalope”) is out as a release candidate now. There’s a whole host of improvements including:
- Gnome 2.26 and XOrg server 1.6
- Improved boot performance
- Updated Linux kernel (version 2.6.28.8)
- Support for the Ext4 file system (though I here there may still be some bugs in Ext4)
- Eucalyptus to allow you to experiment with deploying cloud services.
Final release date for Ubuntu 9 is expected to be April 23rd, just a few scant days away.
