A Patch Too Far? PDF Print E-mail

Some time ago, in the dim and distant past, Microsoft came up with the great idea of creating an update service so that as bugs were discovered in their products they could be automatically downloaded and installed on the general public's computers. However recent experiences have led me to question whether this is really such a good idea.

The Power To Protect PDF Print E-mail

A salutary tale emerged from Clonakilty this week on the vagaries of our power supply in West Cork. At about 10:00 on Monday morning there was a power cut in Clonakilty town centre. To protect against outages you need to:

  1. Make sure your equipment is protected from the power surges that result when the power comes back on.
  2. Use an uninteruptable power supply to protect your data.

With all this 'protection' around you'd wonder why anyone would have a problem during a power cut.

Of Sealing Wax And String... PDF Print E-mail

When I open the case of a PC that's in for repair I'm frequently amazed by the amount of dirt that has accumulated inside the case. However nothing could have prepared me for what I found inside a desktop I was recently asked to service...

XP SP3 Released PDF Print E-mail

The third service pack for Microsoft Windows XP is finally available for download and install. However early observations have indicated that it may not be without it's problems. Just as the Vista Service Pack 1 was withdrawn for a while last week to combat some problems with specific applications it may well be that XP SP3 will see a second iteration before all the issues are ironed out.

If you want to go ahead with the SP3 (or Vista SP1) install and you don't want to leave things to chance then give us a call on 023 88 39496 or email services@ctswestcork.com for information on our upgrade services. If you should install XP SP3 and then find that IE7 no longer works then please give us a call on how to fix the issues.

Vista SP1 Is Here PDF Print E-mail

Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) is now available for installation on your systems. The updates in this service pack can be grouped into three broad categories:

  • Quality and reliability improvements
  • Support for emerging standards and hardware
  • Business infrastructure related enhancements

Whilst there may not be much visible change on the surface there's plenty of changes 'under the hood' that will improve your experience using the Windows Vista operating system.

To get your system upgraded to Windows Vista Service Pack 1 call us now on 023 88 39496 or email cts@ctswestcork.com.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 PDF Print E-mail

Despite it being 12 months since Microsoft released Windows Vista and availability for XP ending in June this year (2008) it's somewhat surprising that a service pack should appear for Windows XP. I guess Microsoft realizes that there's going to be a very significant number of computers running XP for some time and there's just time to squeeze in one more service pack.

The service pack includes
